My mind

We’ve got tips on gaining confidence, blasting anxiety and general life stuff from the people who’ve been there. Remember, we’re in this thing called life together!

Mental health can be really difficult to talk about, trust, because it can be hard to know if someone actually suffers from depression – or to recognise if you’re suffering from it. It’s not easily visible like a broken leg or a nosebleed but it’s just as serious as a physical condition like that.

In this DMC on the 4:01 Show Jack Howard chats to Tomska, who has been diagnosed with severe depression. These guys are already good friends, and they chat easily about what could be seen as quite a “Serious Conversation” but they manage to find a light side, because it’s nothing to be ashamed of! Basically, if you’re worried about a friend’s mental health, or your own, don’t be afraid to chat about it cos it’s totally normal and can take the pressure off. You wouldn’t be nervous about telling someone if you had a really bad toothache, and mental health shouldn’t be treated any differently. Everyone’s signs are different, but maybe your feeling like “I don’t have any friends” or even starting to wonder what to do because you’re thinking something like you’re lonely and have no friends. If that’s the case – you’ve gotta speak to someone, even a doctor. As soon as Tomska did he got diagnosed and was able to work out how to deal with his depression. That could be medication, or psychiatry, or vitamins to stabilise your chemical balance – whatever it is, the doctor will be able to help and point you in the right direction.

Mainly – don’t be afraid! If you feel depressed then talk to someone and get some advice. Depression is something that lots of people suffer from, and the best way to find out if you have it is to open up and chat.
